The solution was found in the face of the Google Translate mobile phone app, and here's how.
For example, if I needed "spicy soup with coconut milk and shrimp", then I just typed this phrase in the program and showed the resulting hieroglyphs to the waiter — he broke into a smile and quickly wrote something down for himself.
