Proton company announced Proton Drive introduces private and encrypted cloud storage for Mac / Proton about the release of the Proton Drive cloud storage client on Mac. The service is now available on all major platforms and on the web.
The main feature of the service is the final encryption, which iCloud does not have. This means that before uploading to the cloud, all your files are encrypted, and no one, including Proton, will be able to access them. In addition to files, all metadata is also encrypted — including names and dates of changes.
Like other Proton services, it is an open source program. The developers noted that in the future they will order an independent security audit from third-party experts to confirm that user data is safe.
The Mac version does not yet have the ability to constantly synchronize a specific folder on the computer with Proton Drive, whereas on Windows there is such a function. macOS users will get it too, but later.
Free accounts have 1 GB of cloud space available, and prices for paid tariffs start at 5 euros per month for 200 GB.
The Proton Drive client for macOS is available on the developer's website (a VPN may be required). There are links on the same page to download versions for other systems.
