Why abortions should never be banned: the opinion of obstetrician-gynecologist Olga Krumkach

Let's define that abortion is an abortion, which in Russia is still done either for medical reasons at different dates, or at the request of a woman. In the first case, these may be malformations of the fetus, the state of health of the mother — such issues are resolved by a consultation of doctors. In the second case, that is, at the request of the woman, pregnancy is usually terminated for up to 12 weeks — later it may be unsafe, so the decision is made on an individual basis.

The ability to have an abortion at will is very important. And that's why.

Abortion is a basic right to safety

The right to an abortion gives a woman the opportunity to make a decision about how many children she wants and when, and how to dispose of her body. This right allows you to feel safe.

Of course, now officials and representatives of the church are actively talking about giving birth. This creates a general background of information. But I must say that Russia, despite everything, is quite loyal in this area. For example, in our country, it is not necessary to obtain the consent of the husband to terminate the pregnancy, as in some countries.

Now in Russia, a woman cannot be denied termination of pregnancy.

The only thing is that after consulting with a doctor, they give you a few days to think, it is prescribed in the recommendations. The fact is that women sometimes go to abortion not so much out of great desire, but because they are forced by family circumstances or financial problems. So the patient may change her mind in these few days. If after that a woman still decided, no one has the right to dissuade her, because this is completely her decision, her personal matter.

Today, you can meet individual specialists who may not treat such a patient very tactfully, shame and even put pressure on her. It's not normal. In fact, doctors do not have such attitudes and do not have such a right, no one from above asks us to do this. It is always the initiative of the doctor himself, who does not know the true reasons, cannot enter into the patient's position. And here there is one piece of advice: change the doctor whenever possible.

In general, abortion remains a woman's personal choice and no one can force her to change it.

Yes, it is not necessary, in my opinion. If a woman decided to have an abortion, but could not do it, most likely she will not raise a child. Therefore, unwanted pregnancies lead to an increase in the number of orphans. These children can, at best, go to foster homes, at worst, remain in the care of the state.

Restricting abortions does not lead to an increase in the birth rate

An attempt to limit or ban abortions is an attempt to raise the birth rate. But there is a paradox here. The decriminalization of abortion in Russia has led to the fact that pregnancy is terminated every year Termination of pregnancy in the subjects of the Russian Federation / Federal State Statistics Service less and less often.

Raising living standards, financial payments, and the availability of kindergartens stimulate the birth rate much more than banning abortions.

The situation is also improving because the attitude towards pregnancy and reproductive plans is becoming more conscious.

But the legal restriction of abortions, as we know from history, does not increase the birth rate. It only contributes to the development of illegal abortion business: women have abortions from unverified specialists, find dangerous drugs somewhere, use folk methods. This was the case in the Soviet Union, where abortions at the request of a woman were prohibited. This is most likely the case in some US states, where abortions have been completely banned since 2022. Fortunately, women there have the opportunity to travel abroad to have an operation.

Clandestine abortions increase female mortality

Abortion opponents say that termination of pregnancy is a very dangerous procedure that can lead to infertility. Yes, like any other medical intervention, there may be complications. But it is impossible to say that there is a direct connection between infertility and abortion. We just can't keep track of it.

Well, how can you be sure that the problems with conception are caused by an abortion performed 10-15 years ago, if the body has changed a lot during this time?

Pathologies during pregnancy or illegal abortion are much more dangerous to life.

When termination of pregnancy is carried out by non-professionals, not under the supervision of doctors, without drugs, without possible support in case of any complications, this can lead to various diseases and to a fatal outcome. For example, in the Soviet Union in the 40s, clandestine abortions became What happened after the prohibition of abortion in 1936 / Demoscope Weekly the cause of half of maternal deaths.

The second problem is when pregnancy puts the mother in danger due to some pathologies , but abortion is still not carried out. In modern Poland, where abortion is banned, there is already In Poland, a woman pregnant with twins died due to the ban on abortions / Burning hut cases where the refusal to terminate a pregnancy put the mother in danger and led to death.
