Microsoft has started You Can Now Open RAR files In Microsoft’s Windows 11 / TechViral deploy KB5031455 update for Windows 11 22H2 with built-in archive unpacker. Previously, this feature appeared in version 23H2.

Now all users can upload 11 file formats inside the system: .rar, .7z, .tar, .tar.gz , .tar.bz2, .tar.zst, .tar.xz, .tgz, .tbz2, .tzst and .txz. But only if they are not password protected – for such cases, you will still need third-party utilities.

In the future, Windows 11 may also have support for LZH and XAR. The goal of the developers is to allow users to work with almost all modern archive formats.

The patch will be available to all users from November 14th. But now you can download a preview version of it in the Windows Update Center. To do this, select the option "Get the latest updates as soon as they become available".

KB5031455 also includes Copilot AI assistant, redesigned Start menu, new Explorer interface, volume mixer and more.
