In the latest test build of Windows 11 (update code KB5025299), a new feature was discovered: system access to presence sensors. This will allow applications to receive information about whether the user is nearby and adjust to this data.
One of the main advantages of this approach is the improvement of data security and confidentiality. The computer or laptop will be able to lock automatically when the user leaves, so that someone else will not be able to come and look at something. It will also affect power consumption: the session will be blocked immediately, and not after the time specified in the settings.
It is noted that the function is implemented completely locally: Microsoft does not collect or store any images or metadata related to the use of presence sensors.
So far, this innovation is only available as part of the KB5025299 build for participants of the Windows Insider beta testing program. It is unclear when it will be added to the stable version of the system.
