Polyphasic sleep. My body is not compatible with the Earth. My daily sleep and wake cycle consists of about 28 hours instead of the usual 24 – which means that every day I am awake for four hours longer than ordinary people. In the middle of the week, I sometimes wake up at 11 p.m. and go to bed early the next morning. When I was younger, people thought I was crazy. The only thing I remember from elementary school is feeling tired.
Over time, I found that the body likes to stick to a 28-hour schedule. I woke up refreshed, fell asleep tired, and everything went great. Apart from the fact that my life was incompatible with the rest of the world. So I had to find a solution.
It was possible to correct the situation with the help of a technique called polyphase sleep – this is very interesting and can be used by everyone. With this technique, you can reduce the average sleep time by 6 hours.
Many people believe that sleep is needed to restore the brain and body, but this is not always the case. We don't know much about sleep.
There are five main parts in each of the several sleep phases that occur during a normal night. One of these phases is called REM (rapid eye rotation), and during it the body receives the most benefits from sleep. At the same time, it is during the REM period that the brain sleeps the least. This is the phase in which dreams arise.
On any of the nights you spend only 1-2 hours in REM sleep, and the rest of the time is wasted on relatively useless phases. Thus, you can train your brain for short periods of REM sleep. This is done using 20-minute intervals, instead of resting once a night. That's how polyphase sleep works.
