Performing difficult tasks: 6 ways to combat procrastination

The eternal theme of how to force yourself to do something that you really, really don't want to do. What can I do, I don't even want to think about it! And to do the job (task) it's still necessary. We have repeatedly raised the topic of how to motivate yourself to perform tedious or difficult work. Someone needs a carrot in front of their nose, someone imagines the terrible consequences of their inaction — a key can be found for everyone. I offer you some more interesting tips that really work.

After reading an article by Timo Kiander about his ways of dealing with the reluctance to start some tasks, I realized that I myself use some of the techniques without even thinking about it. Everything is very simple, clear and applicable to any type of work!

Don't think about it for a long time

The more you think about the fact that you have to do some unpleasant work, the more difficult it is to get ready and start it. And this interferes not only with the performance of a specific task, but also with everything else, since you are constantly thinking about unpleasant things and cannot properly focus on the current work.

Throw all thoughts about the upcoming unpleasant business out of your head, do not accumulate negative emotions in yourself and do other things.

Find alternative execution paths

If you don't even want to think about the fact that you need to start a certain job, try to look at this matter from a different angle. Or you can ask colleagues or friends how they would solve this problem. Sometimes you can find very unusual solutions to your problem in their answers. Or try to make a list of alternative options yourself.

I don't really like to do the cleaning, but I can't put it off, because otherwise the apartment will turn into something terrible, with monsters living in the corners, who accidentally crawled into the light and got tightly entangled in the web. So I'm cleaning in parts: first, the room, so I sit down to work a little, then cleaning the bathroom, which alternates with cooking dinner, etc. It may not be entirely appropriate in time, but cleaning in this way does not cause me so many negative emotions.

If it concerns the project, then maybe you should think about changing your place of work, putting on music, etc.

Do the unpleasant work as quickly as possible

If possible, it is better to get to work as soon as possible. This is almost the same as throwing thoughts of unpleasant work out of your head before you start doing it, but only better. Because you have the opportunity not to let these thoughts even get into your head.

But then you will feel like heroes, because you decided not to postpone the most unpleasant thing for a long time and wiped your nose with your inner voice of procrastination ;)

Break the task into separate small tasks

This advice is somewhat similar to the example of cleaning an apartment in parts. If you find it difficult to force yourself to complete the entire task at once, try to break it into parts and perform it gradually (if possible, of course). It's like writing a diploma, a term paper, an essay or a weekly report.

Everyone knows that if you write at least three pages a day, then everything will be ready by the deadline and you will only need to edit a little. But very few people use this rule as students. If you are not from the category of diligent students, here is an opportunity for you to improve and try to do the same, but only with large projects, TK or reports?

Praise yourself before you start the task

Remember that if you were able to force yourself to start a difficult task, you have already done something that many cannot do without a kick from the side. Be proud of yourself!

The most difficult thing is always to start working! Praise yourself for your courage :) You can first set a time frame of 5 or 10 minutes for yourself to work on this task. After this time, listen to yourself — do you still want to stop or will you still continue to work? It is quite possible that you will get into the taste and cope with the task in one fell swoop.

Think about your past experience

All of us have faced tasks that were difficult for us to complete before, and I'm sure that you have a lot of battles won with your inner voice that whispered sweet things I don't want, I can't, but can I do it a little later?!». And I am sure that after completing these difficult cases, you were very proud and pleased with yourself.

Remember this pleasant feeling before you start doing unpleasant work and it will immediately become easier for you. It is very pleasant to feel like a winner, this feeling is like a drug and you will want it again and again. What is not a great reason to solve another difficult task and remind yourself of this pleasant feeling?

And how do you force yourself to work on a boring or complex project, report, cleaning — the list can be continued indefinitely? What are your signature tricks?
