Despite the fact that the publishing house "Mann, Ivanov and Ferber" has been delighting us with self-development books for a long time, the appearance of the Russian-language version of Stephen Pavlina's book "Personal Success" is a real phenomenon. We could not pass by such an event and are happy to share with you our impressions of what we read.
I am a sophisticated reader of self-development books, and studying each new book is given to me with increasing difficulty - all the time it seems that I have already heard, seen and read it somewhere. However, Pavlina's "Personal success" shook me up — I sat down to read a boring book about how to "ignore failures, blah, blah, blah," but Stephen began with a story about how he ended up in prison. Not a bad plot plot, right?
All books on self—development can be divided into two large categories - some can be opened from any page and read as if nothing had happened, and others will have to be studied from the very beginning, for fear of distraction. "Personal Success" is a book from the second category. Stephen's formula for success is a real formula, with its own terms and variables, which he deduces throughout the book. And reading such a work is not an easy task, requiring concentration of attention and unwillingness to miss something. If you prefer light, relaxed reading — "Personal Success" will seem quite difficult to you.
The second feature that made me tense up is that Stephen from time to time slips from pure self-development to peculiar spiritual practices. The stories about the revelations that cover the author, his amazing properties of rising above the surrounding world and feeling real nirvana are quite amazing, but they can be forgiven (especially since there are quite a few such moments).
However, I fell in love with this book — for the honesty, frankness of the author, for his ability to tell simply about the complex (and difficult about the simple too — sometimes it doesn't sound stupid). Steven Pavlina in the world of self—development is like Schumacher in the world of auto racing or Steve Jobs - in the world of IT, this is a real superstar, with its minuses and pluses. Stephen Pavlina is read by everyone, both those who love him and those who hate him. So you read it — it won't get any worse.
