Many people who have learned English only from books and textbooks have a slight shock when they first go abroad — it turns out that it is absolutely impossible to understand the spoken language of ordinary people! Such a person can read and write freely, but is almost unable to perceive information by ear and maintain a conversation. As a rule, this passes after a short period of adaptation, but if you want to prepare for such a situation in advance, then take the test Oxford Dictionaries Spelling Challenge.

The Oxford Dictionaries Spelling Challenge web application allows you to test the listening skills of English words and the ability to write them correctly. The test has three difficulty levels and a choice between British or American pronunciation. After pressing the Start button, 15 different words will be sequentially voiced to you, which you must write in the input field. If you want, you can repeat the playback of the desired word several times.

You can show off the result on Facebook* or Twitter, as well as view a complete list of all the words of the task and your answers.

On my own behalf, I can add that this testing turned out to be too difficult for me and I barely understood even well-known words by ear. And how are you doing? We share the records in the comments!
