How to clean silver with toothpaste

What you need

  • Toothpaste;
  • soft toothbrush or sponge;
  • soft fabric.

How to do

Apply toothpaste on a brush or sponge or directly on the products. Polish for a few minutes. You can add a little water. Then rinse off the paste and wipe off the silver.

How to clean silver with salt

What you need

  • Aluminum pan (required);
  • water;
  • 1-2 tablespoons of salt;
  • soft fabric.

How to do

Fill a small aluminum pot with about a third or more water. Boil the liquid and dissolve salt in it. If the contamination is strong, you can take more salt.

Lower the product into the solution for a few seconds. If necessary, slightly increase the time, but do not boil the silver for more than 2 minutes. Rinse the cleaned products and wipe with a cloth.

How to clean silver with soda and foil

What you need

  • A saucepan (or other container for the second method);
  • 2-3 liters of water;
  • aluminum foil;
  • 1 cup of soda;
  • soft fabric.

How to do

There are two options.

1st way

Fill the pot with water. Put it on high heat and throw in the crumpled foil. When the liquid boils, pour the soda in parts.

Place the silver in the pan so that it touches the foil. Depending on the contamination, cleaning will take from a few seconds to 2-3 minutes. Wipe the updated products with a cloth.

2nd way

Cover the heat-resistant container with foil. Pour boiling water and dissolve the soda.

Put the silver and keep it inside until the dirt is removed. If necessary, turn the products over so that they touch the foil from different sides. Then wipe them with a cloth.

In a bowl with water, dissolve ammonia and peroxide. Lower the silver into the resulting composition for 15 minutes. After that, rinse the products and wipe dry.

  • Sapphire, emerald and aquamarine are high—density gemstones. Cleaning will not hurt them, no matter what method you choose.
  • Opal, malachite, turquoise and moonstone are not so dense: abrasive substances can scratch their surface. Therefore, choose mild detergents or baths.
  • Ruby, topaz and garnet cannot be cleaned in hot water: they can change color from high temperature.
  • Products with amber, pearls, coral or ivory should be given to specialists for cleaning. These materials are very sensitive to acids, alkalis and any solvents.

How to clean blackened silver at home

When cleaning such products, act carefully and delicately so as not to damage the unique top layer. A soap and soda solution will help you: soak the silver in it for 20-30 minutes.

And here is another effective way. Peel a few potatoes, put them in a container with water and add your decorations to the same place. After 3-4 hours, remove the silver and rinse with water. If the plaque is not completely removed, wipe it off with a rubber eraser.

What to do so that the silver does not darken

To make silver shine brighter, follow simple but effective recommendations:

  • Store the products in a dark, dry place. And it is better that they do not touch each other.
  • Remove rings and bracelets before wet cleaning, taking a bath or shower and applying cosmetics.
  • Wipe the wet silver dry as soon as possible.
