Five tips to help you take notes

Cornell's method

Divide the page into two columns. The left one (it can also serve the wrong side of the previous page) is a little narrower, it will have themes, plans, basic thoughts, new words. In the right, write down everything you can, draw diagrams, tables – the usual summary, but do not forget to mark these questions on the left. From time to time, close the right column and remember what was discussed. Can you tell it in your own words? Try it, and then test yourself.

In some versions of this system, a place is left at the bottom of the page for a summary of what is written, but this is not always effective, although it can help you repeat a large amount of material.

Use color "beacons"

Forget about the status quo and bring colored pens, markers, pencils with you. Color your notes, draw diagrams, highlight headings – all this will help you focus on the main thing and not forget anything, and in the process of working with information, you will remember it naturally, without cramming.

Other means

If possible, work with a laptop. There are many special programs that allow you to quickly type text, immediately organize information, etc. In addition, you will be able to discuss the lecture with your classmates at the same time.

If you're already using it, try going back to notebooks and pens again. Probably, such a drastic change will make lectures more interesting, and their recording easier and more effective. In addition, some things are easier to do on paper than on a computer (for example, diagrams or color "beacons").

Abbreviations  and symbols

In the notes, you can use anything – computer slang, shorthand, even Morse code – they are for your convenience. There are many methods to shorten words – you can, for example, remove some letters, write some differently, easier; use other, shorter words instead of the most common ones - or special icons. If you work on a computer, try programs like Texter (for Windows) or TextExpander (for Macintosh) – they will help you type faster by offering variants of words that have already been encountered in texts.

Don't write

It never hurts to just relax and listen instead of taking notes on every word. You will have the opportunity to follow the lecturer's thought and ask questions. If you can record lectures on audio, even better – then listen to the already familiar text in a calm atmosphere and write down the main points.
