Each of us uses one or another weather service in order to find out what exactly we will need to take with us to the country and whether it is worth going there at all. At the same time, I don't know about you, but I am rarely satisfied with the quality of forecasts. Therefore, let's remember the signs of our ancestors and add fresh scientific knowledge in order to provide ourselves with a forecast even where meteorological services are not available.

Cirrus Clouds over Golden Gate Bridge

Cirrus clouds over the Golden Gate Bridge, Wikipedia.

To predict, you need to take several steps, the first of them should be to determine the type of clouds. Currently, the following types of clouds are distinguished by appearance (starting from the highest):

  • cirrus,
  • cumulus,
  • layered (stratus),
  • rain (nimbus).

Their names speak for themselves, so I will only add information. Cirrus clouds are located at an altitude of 5 to 14 km and therefore consist mainly of ice crystals, while rain clouds are already hundreds of meters from the ground and therefore contain almost exclusively water.

As the height decreases, the clouds move from type to type, according to the list above, and the lowest, rain clouds are the darkest, since they delay the most light.

Simplifying, we can say that the higher the clouds and the more scattered the clouds, and you can already determine this by their type, the more good (sunny and dry) weather awaits us. Follow the movement of clouds: if it is almost absent, you should not expect any changes in the weather in the near future. However, the very presence of a large number of high clouds may indicate that the weather may change in a day or two. If the clouds are noticeably moving, this indicates that weather changes are not far off. Low and dense clouds almost certainly promise rain today, but low but light piles of cotton wool do not portend bad weather, but you should still look to see if they are going to pile up and darken to your misfortune.
