Microsoft stops supporting the classic Edge browser

Last year, Microsoft announced that support for the outdated version of the Edge browser (Edge Legacy) on the EdgeHTML engine will cease on March 9, 2021. The company has not retreated from its plans — from now on there will be no security updates for it.

The official blog says that the outdated version of Microsoft Edge will be removed from the system automatically with the release of the April update of Windows 10. The new Edge on the Chromium engine will be installed forcibly if it is not already present on the PC. User consent is not required for this.

The innovation will affect the following revisions of Windows 10:

  • Windows 10 version 1803 (April 2018);
  • Windows 10 version 1809 (October 2018);
  • Windows 10 version 1903, (May 2019);
  • Windows 10 version 1909 (October 2019);
  • Windows 10 version 2004 (May 2020);
  • Windows 10 version 20H2 (October 2020).

Those who do not use the new Microsoft browser yet and do not want to wait for an update can download and install it manually from the company's website.
