In real life, not every employee can leave a company with a toxic work environment by boldly slamming the door. Perhaps you have an acquaintance or friend who wants to quit, but does not do so. Or you got yourself into such a situation.

People who do not dare to break off painful working relationships are usually criticized for their lack of courage. But in fact, everything is more complicated. Sometimes the employer gives bonuses that become a "leash" and tightly bind a person to an unloved job. The reasons can be very different. Someone needs to pay for the treatment of a loved one, and someone is stopped by unfavorable conditions of termination of the contract.

No matter what situation you are in, the desire to quit and the inability to do so can lead to prolonged despondency, and then depression. Therefore, first of all it is important to take care of your mental health. Here's how to do it.

1. Keep a diary "It could have been worse"

Very often, those who are stuck in an unloved job are advised to keep a gratitude diary and write down three things every day for which a person feels gratitude. Some studies confirm J. Brown, J. Wong. How gratitude changes you and your brain / Greater Good Magazine the effectiveness of this method. It improves mental health, helps to develop endurance and fight the feeling that you are at a dead end.

However, there are people to whom keeping a gratitude diary seems like something forced, unreal and useless. If that's what you think, a diary called "It could have been worse" will do for you. You need to write down everything in it that you find more unpleasant than the job that you want but can't quit.

This negative visualization exercise goes back to the writings of the ancient Stoic philosophers. It allows you to feel sincere gratitude in a more natural way and helps you understand that everything is not so bad.

2. Make breaks and rest your priority

Spending day after day at a job you don't love is hard both emotionally and physically. Especially if you are constantly overwhelmed with tasks. As a result, a person returns home not only tired, but also irritable.

The best way to replenish energy is to fully relax after work in the evenings and take breaks during the day. They don't have to be long. Even 10 minutes of walking in the fresh air or simple physical exercises away from the computer screen will help to maintain concentration and good mood. You will feel more relaxed about your unloved work, and your loved ones will thank you, because you will have the strength to please them with your attention and care at the end of the working day.

3. Prepare for the next step

The phrase "Everything passes" sounds corny, but it's true. Most likely, the unpleasant period you are in will end faster than it seems. Sometimes it's enough just to remember that everything is temporary in order to keep a productive and positive attitude.

At the same time, it is important to be ready for the moment when you have the opportunity to change the situation. And this can also happen at any moment. So that the changes do not take you by surprise, answer a few questions honestly:

  • Do you know exactly what you expect from a new job?
  • Do you have a good idea of your strengths?
  • Will you be able to clearly describe the contribution that you can make to the team result?
  • Does your RESUME contain relevant information?
  • Have you recently discussed your career ambitions with someone who would help you realize them?

If you answered "yes" to all the questions, then you are ready. And if you heard "no" somewhere, now you know where to direct your efforts and time.
