Translation from a foreign language is one of the most difficult computer tasks. Although the quality of machine translation has grown significantly recently, it still lags far behind the quality of human translation. Therefore, Microsoft has started using the most modern artificial intelligence technologies in its translator.
To date, computer translators have used two machine translation algorithms: rule-based and statistical-based. Now Microsoft Translator is starting to use an artificial neural network for translation, which is built on the principle of the organization and functioning of biological neural networks — networks of nerve cells of a living organism. The company hopes that this will raise the quality of machine translation to a whole new level.
The new technology already works in Microsoft Translator mobile clients for Android and iOS, desktop application and Skype. Currently, the translation is available for ten languages, including Russian and English.
In the blog, the companies note that while neural translation is at an early stage of implementation, but already now its results are significantly superior to the previous ones. You can confirm or refute this statement right now on a special site that allows you to compare the old and new algorithms of Microsoft Translator.
It seems to us that the quality of translation has become much better. And you?
