Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook COO*, on the balance between personal life and work

Everyone has long been accustomed to the fact that if you are rapidly soaring up the career ladder, then you simply won't have time to think about your personal life. This is especially true for girls. If you come to a promising job, you are immediately given to understand that from now on your colleagues are your family, and if you want to become a respected member of the team, you can not even think about children in the next five years.

There are a lot of successful and family-free people among my friends, and vice versa. And only a few manage to successfully combine work with personal life. And these most successful people in everything share their secrets so that someone else can become at least a little happier and more successful.

Advice from Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook*. She has something to tell.

Cheryl has found a simple rule that allows her to be successful both at work and at home. She and her husband, David Goldberg, CEO of SurveyMonkey, shared equally household responsibilities and identified their work priorities (not just hers).

In her video, Cheryl talks about the most important career decisions and how to keep a balance between work and personal life.

In a standard American family, a woman does much more housework and takes care of children. So most simply can't manage to be successful both in their career and in family life. We all have a choice, but at the same time, for some reason, women do not allow men to decide how much they want to help them around the house and with children.

Perhaps men would be very pleased if we let them help us with the housework. They would be good because they can help around the house.

When Cheryl's first child appeared in the family, her husband worked in another city. But they still tried to keep a balance and divide the housework equally, so that neither his nor her career would suffer. If a woman has a successful husband, she is usually told something like: "Wow, congratulations! Your husband is just great!». But when a woman is more successful in the family, for some reason, others begin to sympathize with her husband and ask how he is going through all this. Because a man is more successful than his wife — this is practically an axiom and is considered absolutely normal. But when a woman achieves more in her career than her husband, it happens extremely rarely. That is, success in the career of men is considered the norm, and successful business and at the same time family women are rather a special case.

The most important decision you can make in relation to your career is the choice of your significant other.

After watching this video, I had a logical question: Do you know how to balance?». How are family responsibilities divided in your family, and whose career growth has a higher priority. And does everyone agree with this? Or are they silent simply because the option «successful man — less successful woman » is considered standard in our country?
