I thought about it a little bit [participating in the film], and when they told me what the story would be, I realized that I really wanted to do it. I think it's a great exploration of the world of Star Wars. It's a really cool way to take the story in a slightly different direction.
The last released film with Rey was "Skywalker. Sunrise" 2019. He completed a new trilogy, and for several years the fate of the film franchise remained unclear — until three new films were announced at Star Wars Celebration 2023. Among them is a full—length sequel to the story of Rey. 15 years after the events of Sunrise, she will be rebuilding the Jedi Order.
But soon after the publication of the interview with Ridley, disturbing news appeared. The World of Reel portal, with reference to "a source well informed about the situation," writes Upcoming Rey ‘Star Wars’ Movie Delayed Indefinitely / World of Reel that the development of the Obaid-Chinoy film has been postponed indefinitely. The reason is called creative differences between screenwriter Stephen Knight ("Peaky Blinders") and LucasFilm. Although Knight had already completed the draft script, LucasFilm sent so many edits that the work had to start over. It is not known now whether the bosses criticized exactly the changes in approach that Daisy Ridley liked.
At this rate, Knight may well leave the project. His irritation with LucasFilm bosses is growing, which is why he postponed work on Star Wars and focused on the script for the feature film on "Sharp Visors", filming of which is scheduled to start in the fall.
Moreover, Knight is not the first to burn out on this project: in two years of development, different versions of the script from different authors have already appeared. Among them are Damon Lindelof ("Guardians") and Justin Britt-Gibson ("Banshee", "Strain"). Over time, both left, and Knight took their place.
The same source notes that it was precisely because of these problems that Disney suddenly announced a full-length film on "Mandalorian": the company is no longer sure that the release of a film about Rey is possible in the near future.
