Apple unexpectedly announced the transition to the RCS (Rich Communication Services) messaging standard. This feature will be launched with a software update "later next year" and will provide a lot of new opportunities for correspondence between iPhone and Android users.

9to5Mac writes Apple announces that RCS support is coming to iPhone next year / 9to5Mac that Apple's decision was made amid pressure from regulators and competitors such as Google and Samsung. They were repeatedly trolled Crazy! Google gifts RCS code to Apple, Samsung trolls The iPhone manufacturer is grateful that the company does not switch to modern and more advanced solutions for cross-platform communication.

According to an Apple representative, the universal RCS profile will provide better compatibility compared to SMS or MMS. It will work alongside iMessage, which will continue to be the best and most secure messaging tool for Apple users.

RCS provides many iMessage-style features for cross-platform messaging between iOS and Android devices. Users of both platforms can see read notifications, text typing indicators, as well as transfer high-quality images, videos, files and much more in correspondence with each other. And unlike regular SMS, RCS can also work via mobile internet and Wi-Fi.

But what is noteworthy is that Apple is implementing these changes as if for show, because RCS will simply replace SMS and MMS and will exist separately from iMessage. iPhone users will probably continue to communicate in the branded messenger.

In Russia, RCS on Android smartphones is not officially supported due to Google restrictions, as in China, Iran and the DPRK. However, it is not necessary to get approval from an American corporation to send messages using this protocol. A service with RCS support can be provided by a mobile operator. And in Russia it does RCS technology in the MTS network: communicate in the SMS application, as in a messenger MTS. However, not in all regions yet, and for this you need a compatible Samsung smartphone. What will happen with the iPhone is still unclear.
