Eyestrain is a symptom that manifests itself when you overexert your eyes for a long time while reading books or working at a computer.
Eye strain may include one or more of the following ailments:
Eye strain does not lead to irreversible consequences for the visual system, but it can prevent you from working. The causes of stress can be purely individual, but there are three main ones: an unergonomical workplace, poor lighting and inadequate eye care. Let's see how we can prevent this problem from occurring.
Eye strain can cause a lot of trouble, which can be avoided by arranging your workplace correctly.
Enlarge the text. It is difficult for your eyes to glide over excessively small text. If you work a lot in text editors or read a lot, increase the font size (for example, using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl and +). It should be comfortable for you. If you have to peer at the monitor or tilt your head to see something, then the text is still too small.
Read offline. Intensive reading at the computer is the enemy of productivity, as your eyes get tired very quickly. If you need to read a large text on the Internet, print it out and read it later in normal light. If, of course, this option is acceptable to you. Get an E-Ink-based reader or prefer paper books to electronic ones.
Take breaks. Your computer can work for a long time without interruptions, and yet you are not a machine. Therefore, you need to stop sometimes to rest. To do this, you can use the "20-20" rule: after every 20 minutes of work, take your eyes off the monitor for 20 seconds and look at an object far from you.
Move the monitor. When you work while staring at the monitor, you blink less than usual. Your eyes become drier and redder from this. To eliminate this annoying misunderstanding, place the monitor below eye level. You'll see, you'll have to blink more often. This is very good for the eyes and reduces tension.
Relax. Sometimes you need to get up from the computer and take breaks. A walk is the most useful form of rest at work. In addition, you should sit back for a while, taking the tension off your shoulders and neck. Give your eyes some darkness: cover them with your palms for a few minutes or sit in a darker room than your office.
Improper lighting also causes a lot of damage to the eyes. Too bright light irritates the visual system, lack of illumination leads to visual tension. Therefore, here I will give some tips that will help you find a balance.
Adjust the brightness and contrast. Lower these parameters in your monitor settings until it brings discomfort. Choose a theme with neutral muted colors. Find a balance between workplace lighting and computer display brightness.
Set up other light sources in the room. If the room is too dark, turn up the brightness slightly in the display settings. But avoid too bright light hitting your eyes. I'm talking about the feeling that happens to you if you suddenly look sharply out of the window during the day. Also avoid bright light sources behind the monitor and behind your back. Ideally, use a matte display.
Put on sunglasses. When you are not at the computer, sunglasses will help you relieve your eyes and make it easier to change brightness. If you are going outside, put on sunglasses, they will allow your eyes to rest even in bright sunlight. You can wear them at home. By the way, you need to choose those glasses that provide protection from ultraviolet light.
Changing the workspace and adjusting the light, do not forget that vision needs to be maintained.
Remember: your eyes are not designed for continuous work at the computer. The faster you organize the workplace correctly, adjust the light and start doing exercises for the eyes, the more chances you have to maintain good eyesight and avoid visual tension.
