Scientists conducted a study with twins prone to obesity, and found that if a person sleeps enough time, it is easier for him to keep his weight normal.
The research was conducted by Dr. Nathaniel Watson at the University of Washington. Under his supervision there were 1088 pairs of homozygous and heterozygous twins. The results of the research were published in the Sleep Journal, a journal supported by the American Academy of Sleep. During the study, which compared the amount of sleep in twins and their weight, it turned out that those of them who slept more during the night had a body mass index lower than those who slept less.
You remember that we are talking about people who tend to be overweight, i.e. who have a gene that promotes weight gain. So, too short sleep (less than 7 hours) triggers this gene to work, while prolonged sleep (9 or more hours) greatly reduces the risk of an increase in body mass index: for those twins who slept for more than 9 hours, the effect of genetic predisposition on weight was 32%, and for those who slept less than 7 hours — 70%.
Simply put, the less you sleep, the more your genes will affect your weight not for the better.
Our weight depends both on genetic factors and on how we ourselves struggle with harmful eating habits. If you want to lose weight, eat right and sleep more, so that your weight depends only on you, and not on a genetic predisposition.
