Learning foreign words, part 3

We continue our cycle of notes about interesting and useful ways to replenish your vocabulary — an active vocabulary of foreign words. We have already talked about word cards and the "Sing with me" method, this time you will learn about another, rather sticky method (in the literal and figurative senses of the word).

Today we will "half" the number of our ways and take a short break, and then we will continue with the most interesting and delicious — podcasts, blogs and other cool things.

Sticking

The author of the note immediately warns that he personally is against words like "sticking", "jipping", "horse/koning" and other kinds of verbal freaks, but since we are already talking about foreign words, today it is possible.

The name of today's method comes from the word "sticker" — it's such a small piece of paper with an adhesive edge, which is also often called memo — it's very convenient to write something on it, and then stick it in a prominent place - you won't pass by so that you don't notice. This is the feature of stickers that we will use.

Our current method is very useful for people who are going to travel or live abroad — the first thing they will encounter is not a volume of Shakespeare, but a lot of household trifles and appliances. The author personally observed how a person, in whose head, according to him, there is a whole thick dictionary, could not explain what, sorry, the toilet (in his room it broke). Onomatopoeia came to the rescue (but onomatopoeia alone, as you know, you won't get far).

Take a thick pack of stickers and stick them all over the house — on cabinets, household appliances, switches, all small elements of the decor like a chandelier, a door handle and a photo frame. Also, be sure to stick stickers on everything you have in the bathroom — from the aforementioned toilet bowl to soap and other nonsense like a shaving machine. And now go through the dictionary and write on each sticker the meaning of the word in English (or in the language you need). Ready! All you have to do now is to live in the atmosphere of stickers and automatically memorize the values of the things you are used to.

The words will be absorbed into your head quickly enough, and you will not have to make much effort to memorize — everything will happen by itself.

This method is good to use when you live at home alone — your household may be against a pile of pasted leaves. Also, we do not recommend gluing stickers on pets and household members themselves (for the same reason).

The author's experience suggests that a couple of days is enough to remember in sufficient detail the names of objects and things that we see every day and that we will often use while in an English-speaking environment. And the toilet in English, by the way, is a familiar water closetwater closet (you can also easily call it WC — they will understand you). Write it down on a sticker and stick it!
